The NCRTP-HepC would like to congratulate Prof. Gregory Dore (PI), Dr. Jason Grebely (CI), Dr. Rosie Thein (CI) and Prof. Murray Krahn (AI) on their recent successful grant funding from the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) of Australia. In collaboration with a number of other Australian co-investigators, they were awarded one of 27 successful grants from an original 423 applications. The total amount funded includes ~$2.5 million over 5 years with $1,495,188 from the NHMRC and an equivalent $1.0 million in contributions from the NSW Health Department and the other partnering organizations.
The main objective of the grant was to evaluate an innovative model of assessment and treatment for chronic hepatitis C virus infection among current and former injecting drug users in the opiate pharmacotherapy setting. This was a brand new funding scheme under the title "NHMRC Partnerships for Better Health: Creating effective collaboration between policy and research". The application was developed by working closely with other researchers, health service delivery partners, health policy makers (NSW Health) and community groups (NSW Hepatitis C Council and the NSW Users and AIDS Association - drug user group).
Drs. Thein and Krahn have also won or are collaborating on another two Australian grants entitled "Modelling and economic evaluation of hepatitis C epidemic mitigation strategies in Australia" and "Hepatitis C, Prisons and Treatment Opportunities (HePATO)."
For more information on these grants, please visit the National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia website.
It is great to see that the NCRTP-Hep C has provided trainees with the capacity to develop transdisciplinary links with Canadian and International researchers to further health research. Further, the involvement between current trainees, alumni trainees and mentors within the program is a testament to the success of the training program.
