Biography  Ava John-Baptiste is a doctoral student in the Department of Health Policy, Management & Evaluation at the University of Toronto. The topic of her thesis is “The Cost-effectiveness of treating Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infected persons who are active or recent substance abusers with antiviral therapy.?Substance abuse is the major mode of transmission of HCV in North America, but very few active or recent substance abusers receive treatment with antiviral therapies. Barriers to treatment include patient related factors (substance use, mental health disorders), medication related factors (adverse effects) and system effects (existing practice patterns, inadequate access to drugs).

    Research interests:
    - The role of economic evaluation and decision analytic methods in improving the allocation of health care resources ?identifying limitations to the usefulness of decision analyses and barriers to the uptake of decision models in health care policy
    - Bridging the gap between mathematical tools of epidemiology and decision analytic techniques - Incorporating epidemic models of HCV transmission into economic evaluation of HCV policy
    - Measurement of quality of life using psychometric and utility measures in HCV infected substance abusers
    - Application of Bayesian methods to evidence synthesis including systematic review, statistical analysis and cost-effectiveness modeling
    - Measurement of health care costs from patient and provider perspectives using questionnaires, chart reviews and administrative databases
